Highlights

Return to Titletown

The Packers finally got back to the promised land, but the journey wasn’t without its trials and tribulations. The foundation was laid with the arrival of Ron Wolf as general manager, which brought Mike Holmgren as head coach, Brett Favre as quarterback and Reggie White as the biggest free-agent signing in the team’s, if not the league’s, history.

Green Bay returned to the postseason after an 11-year absence in 1993, but that began a string of three consecutive playoff exits at the hands of the Cowboys in Dallas. Amidst Favre’s unprecedented three consecutive NFL MVP awards, the breakthrough finally came in 1996 with the Super Bowl XXXI title, and the Lombardi Trophy returned home for the first time in 29 years.

A shot at back-to-back championships was thwarted by the underdog Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXXII, and after a last-second playoff loss at San Francisco in the 1998 wild-card game, the tenures of Holmgren and White in Green Bay ended, and the franchise’s revival had run its course.
