Highlights

Difficult struggles, but times start to turn

After the Packers barely survived a league merger that threatened to oust them from the league, a third public stock sale and an insurance payout from the Rockwood Lodge training facility burning down helped keep the team afloat.

With the franchise’s first change from Curly Lambeau as coach, wins were hard to come by, though the building blocks for a great decade to come began to take shape, as Jack Vainisi started working in a key personnel role, and the drafts in 1956 (Bart Starr), 1957 (Paul Hornung) and 1958 (Jim Taylor, Ray Nitschke, Jerry Kramer) began producing eventual Hall of Famers.

Among other milestones in the decade, Bob Mann became the first African-American to play for the Packers (1950), new Green Bay City Stadium was built (1957), and Dominic Olejniczak began a 24-year tenure as team president the same year the training camp relationship with St. Norbert started (1958).
