NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle suspends Paul Hornung and Detroit’s Alex Karras for gambling on football games. Hornung’s suspension is lifted after one season.

That one season was significant, though, as the two-time defending champion Packers failed to win a third straight NFL crown. They finished 11-2-1, with both losses coming to the rival Bears, who went 11-1-2 to win the Western Conference before going on to beat the Giants for the league title.

In addition to Hornung, the Packers were also missing QB Bart Starr due to injury for the second game against the Bears, a 26-7 loss on Nov. 17 at Wrigley Field that put Chicago in control of the conference.
