Vice President Richard Nixon, Marshal Matt Dillon (actor James Arness) from Gunsmoke and Miss America Marilyn Van Derbur are on hand to dedicate the new Green Bay City Stadium, which opens with a 21-17 victory over the Bears.
Babe Parilli throws two touchdown passes, one a 37-yarder to Billy Howton and the other a 6-yarder to Gary Knafelc in the fourth quarter for the game-winner. The teams combine for 10 turnovers in the game, though, perhaps a sign of the rough season ahead for both.
The Packers finish a disappointing 3-9 in Lisle Blackbourn’s fourth and final season as head coach, while the Bears wind up 5-7. The two teams would occupy the bottom two spots in the Western Conference.
