After having his No. 15 retired 13 ½ months earlier, Bart Starr is named head coach to replace Dan Devine, who eight days prior resigned to become the head coach at Notre Dame.

Starr’s tenure did not revive the franchise as planned, however, as he posted a disappointing 52-76-3 regular-season record over nine years (1975-83) and qualified for the postseason just once, during the strike-shortened 1982 campaign.

Following a disheartening 23-21 loss to the Bears in single-digit temps at Soldier Field in the ’83 season finale, a loss that cost the Packers a second straight playoff spot, Starr was fired and another Lombardi-era player and Hall of Famer, Forrest Gregg, took over as head coach.
