Ted Thompson is named Packers general manager, as Green Bay returns to the structure of separating the GM/head coach positions.

Team president/CEO Bob Harlan made the move, having targeted Thompson as his top GM candidate and bringing Thompson back to Green Bay after an extended tenure in the personnel department under Ron Wolf in the 1990s.

Three months and nine days later, Thompson selected Cal quarterback Aaron Rodgers with his first draft pick, the 24th overall selection.

Originally thought to be a potential No. 1 overall pick, Rodgers suffered through an agonizing wait on national TV in the NFL’s green room at New York City’s Radio Music Hall for upwards of eight hours before finally getting chosen.
