Brown County voters approve a referendum by a 53-to-47 percent margin to establish a half-cent sales tax to help fund a $295 million renovation of Lambeau Field.

The referendum supported more than $160 million in bonding for the project, which was also financed by state funding, a one-time seat user fee, proceeds from the 1997-98 stock sale, and an NFL loan.

The improvements boosted Lambeau’s seating capacity by more than 10,000, to 73,094, a number that has since climbed above 80,000. Most important, the redeveloped stadium gave the Packers additional revenue streams that allowed Green Bay to jump 10 spots in the league’s annual revenue rankings the first year, keeping the franchise financially competitive.
