A 23-year-old Notre Dame graduate named Jack Vainisi begins working for the Packers, keeping records on college players and handling stats. He becomes instrumental in the drafts that helped build Vince Lombardi’s championship teams.

With Vainisi’s assistance, the Packers draft Pro Football Hall of Famers Forrest Gregg and Bart Starr in 1956, Paul Hornung in ’57, plus Jim Taylor, Ray Nitschke and Jerry Kramer in ’58, amongst many other players who become vital to the Lombardi era.

Ten years later, in 1960, Vainisi dies from a chronic rheumatic heart condition at the age of 33, before the Packers play their first postseason game under Lombardi.
